ADHD Q & A
What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental and behavioral condition that often appears in childhood. The disorder may or may not last into adulthood, but the symptoms can evolve as you age.
There are three different subcategories of ADHD, and each of them can impact your learning, focus, or performance at work. Your providers at Adrian Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic assess your symptoms to find out which type you have and how you can manage it.
At Adrian Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic, you can access top-tier counseling and medications to manage your ADHD. You receive an individualized care plan according to your diagnoses, any co-occurring conditions, and personal preferences.
Which type of ADHD do I have?
ADHD comes in three varieties. The first two have their own sets of symptoms, while the third involves a combination of the other two. Your diagnosis may be:
Predominantly inattentive: Predominantly inattentive ADHD was traditionally called attention-deficit disorder, or ADD. It causes trouble focusing and following through with tasks, and leads to distractions and disorganization.
Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive: The predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type of ADHD involves fidgeting, trouble sitting still, and frequent interruptions. You may also have a hard time waiting your turn.
Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive: The combined type of ADHD is the most common of the three. With it, you experience symptoms of both other types.
How is ADHD treated?
Treatment for ADHD at Adrian Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic involves individualized care based on the results of assessments of your mental and behavioral health. Most people with ADHD respond well to a combination of stimulant or non-stimulant medications and counseling or psychotherapy.
Behavioral therapy for ADHD helps you learn how to recognize your own behavioral patterns and manage them so you can reduce some of the symptoms that impact you the most.
Alongside the traditional treatments of medications and personalized counseling or psychotherapy, your treatment may involve learning aides or a modified curriculum if you’re in school.
